Director’s Statement
When I was 18, I left my home in Utah and served two years as a Mormon missionary in Germany. For some, the mission experience is an enlightening event that shapes the rest of their lives. For others, it is a bizarre and stressful nightmare. For me, the experience probably lands somewhere in between. As time passes and I gain more distance from my life as a missionary, I become more aware of the peculiarities of that time. Every day, the idea of exploring missionary life on film becomes more fascinating to me.
A Light That Doesn’t Dim explores what it’s like to live and struggle within the expectations of others.
Visually and sonically, we aim to explore the pressures of familial and cultural expectations that a young Sister missionary faces. Perhaps you never served a Mormon mission, but the idea of working within a complicated set of circumstances and operating through them is something I hope many can gravitate to.
Thank you.
